Bangalore, 28thFeb 2018 : Aligned with its corporate values of enriching the communities, Toyota Kirloskar Motor [TKM] undertook the reconstruction of two Government schools in Yandahalli & Kupya villages in Mysore District aimed towards promoting access to quality education. The newly reconstructed schools are expected to benefit over 250 students with necessary facilities to create a favorable and safer environment for the schoolchildren and ensure improvement in the standard of education.

The schools were inaugurated by Shree. R. Dhruva Narayana, Member of Parliament, Chamarajanagara Constituency, Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah, Ms. S. Mamatha, Deputy Director of Public Instruction – Mysore and senior management executive from Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Mr. Shekar Viswanathan, Vice Chairman & Whole-time Director, Mr. R Vinay Kumar, Vice President in the presence of members from the local gram panchayat, school authorities and students.

Apart from reconstructing the dilapidated school structures, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has extended its support by providing basic amenities such as desks, benches, cupboards, chairs and tables. Separate toilets for boys and girls including an incinerator for girls are also built keeping in mind the health and hygiene of the students. The up-gradation work also includes a teacher’s room along with necessary modern amenities in the school premises.

Acknowledging Toyota’s unstinted efforts in realizing the right to education, Ms. S. Mamatha, Deputy Director of Public Instruction [Mysore] said, “Lack of infrastructure remains one of the single biggest causes for school dropouts in our state, and what we need today are tangible solutions to retain students in Government schools. I take this opportunity to thank Toyota Kirloskar Motor for their efforts to bring about a progressive and sustainable transformation in the society through quality academic development. It is time, we all reboot the India education system through such sustainable projects jointly by the government, industry and academia.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shekar Viswanathan, Vice Chairman & Whole-time Director - Toyota Kirloskar Motor said,“According to recent reports released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), over 60 million children are deprived of education [includes school dropouts] in India*. This is a huge number and corrective measures need to be implemented sooner. Adequate infrastructure and amenities in schools have a direct impact on students and teachers, and a badly maintained school environment detrimentally affects the overall learning experience.

At Toyota, our emphasis is on providing opportunities for a child’s development to reach their full potential. We constantly evaluate to understand the underlying causes of school dropouts and consequently work to address such concerns. Over the years, we have established many projects across Karnataka that has helped in the development of children by providing them a conducive environment to continue their education. We hope these newly reconstructed schools will make their school-going experience more enriching and maximize the educational values amongst the children, which will further help in the socio-economic growth of the society,” he added.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor over the years has initiated several projects to accelerate access to quality education in the country. The company has reconstructed many government schools in Dyavalinganapalya and Thalaguppe villages of Ramanagara District in May 2017, benefitting over 95 students covering 1st – 5th grades. They also constructed Ashrama School at Byramangala, LPS School at Medanahalli & Ashrama School at Hosadoddi. These projects have shown a positive impact on the school attendance ratio - with an increase from 28% to 36% in Medanahalli and 40% to 60% in Hosadoddi schools. In 2017, the company distributed 74920 note books, 1200 nos. of bags, drawing books & crayons and 2225 geometry boxes to over 12500 students across 172 schools. These contributions of the company have led to a visible decrease in the school dropout rates, in Bidadi region, from 0.8% in 2012 to 0.4% in 2016. Also these programs have expanded over a period, enhancing the beneficiary coverage to more than 9000 school children during last academic year, as compared to 3000 children in 2007.

Under the Government’s National Campaign to provide clean sanitation facilities for girl child in India, Toyota has also pledged its support to ‘Swacch Bharat – Swacch Vidyalaya’ – by constructing sanitation units at identified schools by the Government in 3 locations across India to help reduce school dropouts. The company constructed 650 units of sanitation facilities in 206 government schools across India (of which 125 units are located in Varanasi, 426 units in Ramanagara district in Karnataka and 125 units in Vaishali in Bihar).
